"Smell of Death", by H R Stevenson
This story underlines the potential dangerous ramifications of genetic engineering, and what could happen if something supposedly innocuous did explode into a problem of unprecedeneted magnitude. A great discussion item for small groups.
"Smell of Death" Introduction: It was a smell that you could not stand to smell. That was what started the whole problem. "Body odor" overall was the best phrase. Specifically, the famous “armpit odor” ranked among the highest of disagreeable odors. However, bad breath got a high rating, too. America, yes, the good and super-clean United States of America, started the new biotechnology push towards fresher smelling bodies. Genetic engineering began huge leaps into previously unexplored areas. Cloning advances throughout the science world showed staggering increases of colossal magnitude. THAT's when the problem started. Read more...
